Food Technology is a science branch that deals with the techniques involved in production, processing, preservation, packaging, labeling, quality management, and distribution of food products. The field also involves techniques and processes that are used to transform raw materials into food. Extensive research goes behind making food items edible as well as nutritious. Food Science and Technology is vital and multi-disciplinary branch, which concerns with physiochemical, biochemical, microbiological and nutritional interactions of the micro, semi-micro and macro molecules of food ingredients either within or added externally which monitor the overall quality altitudes. Moreover, it also concentrates and relates to the formulation, product development, preservation, storage distribution, transportation, marketing, quality control, management and utilization of finished food stuffs.
As deep as we go into the dimensions of food technology, we require professionals in this field. And, this has led to the emergence of food technology courses. There are a plethora of opportunities for students who wish to pursue a course in food technology. Graduates or postgraduates in the course can seek jobs in different domains such as restaurants, catering establishments, hospitals, food processing companies, etc.
Thus, in order to achieve the consumer’s need and foreign exchange, the country has to evolve the appropriate and innovative technology for processing, packing, transport, storage etc. The responsibilities of teaching, research and extension have been shared and distributed among the Five departments as under.
1) Food Technology (FT)
